 Presently depression is the most common mental health disorder which is capable of killing someone. Almost all of us feel low at some point of life due to the problems we encounter. If the emotions like sadness, feeling like crying, bad mood are temporary that is not depression.

Depression is a phase where the bad emotion like feeling sad, worthless and unwilling or loss of interest in doing any work which was pleasurable before, lasts for weeks, months or even years. Getting yourself or someone close to you out of depression takes a lot of effort. In the absence of such effort the person going through depression may even die. 

Fortunately it is not impossible to get someone out from depression. For, the sake of humanity it is our moral duty to put forward a helping hand to those person who are suffering from this dangerous mental illness. There are various professionals like psychologist and physiatrist who treat such person by proper guidance and anti-depressant drugs.

The problem why people remain untreated and die of depression is society does not take depression as a disease, or health problem like cancer, diabetes etc. But the fact is depression is no less than the life taking chronic disease such as cancer. In this article we are going to discuss some causes of and symptoms of depression in general. Although this varies with the age, gender and the environment of the person suffering from depression.

1. CHILD ABUSE-

If one has undergone through some extreme child abuse which had long lasting impression on the brain, he/she is more likely to suffer from depression. To avoid this parents should pay attention to the changing behavior of their child which are uncommon. By having effective communication with them, parents can keep their child safe from the risk of depression.

2. FAILURE IN PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE-

Many a times one is so confident that he only prepares himself for handling the pleasure after getting success. In such case if an unexpected failure gets in their way they get completely crushed. This failure could be either personal such as rejection in relationship or professional such as not qualifying in the entrance examination which they were so sure of. This problems are quite normal for those who are able to recover by getting proper guidance from close once. But this may lead someone to severe depressive condition with lack of external support.

3. GETTING INSULTED OR BEING MOCKED PUBLICALY-

 This is most common when a person is going through teenage. The hormonal and physical changes taking place in the body reduces the capacity of brain in handling a public insult or mocking. You have to be very careful with your words when you are dealing with teens. They may even misunderstand a joke which is supposed to be funny and by overthinking this can lead them to severe cases of depression.

1. UNWILLINGNESS TO DO WORK-

When there is a long list of to do works and there is no willingness to perform any, this might be a symptom of depression. Depressed person lack motivation from inside and they also avoid motivation from external sources.

2. MOOD SWINGS-

In depressed person you may observe unpredictable mood swings. Sometimes they get extremely happy and laugh a lot, on the very next moment they may be extremely sad and may also cry. Few depressed person try to show the world that they are all right by smiling and cracking jokes but cry hard when nobody is around them.

3. FEELING ALONE OR LEFT OUT-

 Depressed people always feel like they are completely alone, nobody cares about them even those who are close to them like friends, family members. There are rarely two to three person whom they trust. They may feel like nobody is willing to help them, all are with them because they want something from them. They fell that nobody cares if they are dead or alive. This thought may lead them to commit suicide.

4. LACK OF INTEREST IN EVERYTHING-

 Depressed person lose interest in almost everything. Those activities like reading, dancing, playing which they felt pleasurable once, no more appeal them.

5. SELF WORTHLESSNESS-

 Depressed person lack self-confidence and self-esteem. They doubt their own capabilities. A sense of self worthlessness makes place in their heart and mind. This could be because someone have told them in past ‘Nothing could happen of yours, you are a trash, you won’t be successful’. Being told this several times they begin to believe this. This could also feel them with sense of guilt and regret. They are annoyed and unhappy with themselves.

6. IRREGULAR SLEEP PATTERNS-

 Few depressed people show lack of sleep due to negative thoughts while other sleep excessively just to run away from the present situations in their own world of dreams.

7. EATING DISORDER-

 The person undergoing depression may either lose appetite, resulting in becoming underweight or perform overeating practices and become overweight.
